ABOUT US

L’UniThéâtre was formed in 1992 with the merger of the Théâtre français d’Edmonton (founded in 1968) and the Boîte à Popicos (1978).

Being a professional francophone theatre company located in Edmonton, L’UniThéâtre’s provincial mandate is to contribute to the development of the francophone community and to the promotion of the French language and French-language cultural expressions across Canada through activities related to the theatrical art form. This encopmasses professional and community theatre, theatre for young audiences, special events, as well as training and development activities.

L’UniThéâtre presents four professional productions a year including a theatre for young audiences tour that is performed in schools across Alberta and British-Columbia. It also presents, on every other year, a larger scale community production. In addition to our main stage season, L'UniThéâtre also offers initiatives that aim to support emerging artists in the francophone community as well as workshops in schools to encourage Alberta's French-speaking students to participate in local theatre.

A few of the company’s past and recent accomplishments include Cow-Boy Poétré, a creation by Kenneth Brown, conceived from an original idea by L’UniThéâtre’s past Artistic Director, Daniel Cournoyer, which was presented during the Festival Zones théâtrales of Ottawa’s National Arts Centre and was a phenomenal success. This play also went on tour throughout Alberta and was presented, by invitation, on tour in New Brunswick. In 2007, the play Fort Mac, by Marc Prescott and directed by Daniel Cournoyer, was presented at Ottawa’s Festival Zones théâtrales and in Montreal at the Théâtre Denise-Pelletier and later, went on tour throughout Alberta and was presented in Lethbridge, Calgary, St. Isidore and Cold Lake.

In 2013, L’UniThéâtre received the Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Award for “Outstanding Contribution to Theatre in Edmonton”.

L’UniThéâtre is glad to serve Alberta’s francophone community. The company’s desire is to continue to create a sense of unity between Edmonton and Alberta’s communities through theatre.
