Aidan Macpherson is a physics student at the University of Alberta. An Anglophone from Edmonton, Aidan has been studying French since he was a child, but he principally learned the language at university. During the Winter 2016 semester, he was enrolled in FREN 312, which included a Community Service Learning (CSL) component and was given the opportunity to work for CANAVUA (Canadian Volunteers United in Action), a not-for- profit organization. The General Director, Dicky Dikamba, hired him as a liaison officer for the summer and gave him a ticket to go see L’UniThéâtre’s community play Refuge.
The first time Aidan heard French being spoken, he was touched by its beauty. Since French is one of the two official languages of Canada, he was easily able to improve his language abilities and to benefit from all of the advantages that bilingualism offers.
