Engagement, entertainment, exploration

Director's Word

2016-2017 SEASON – “ILLUMINATION”

Someone recently asked me if L'UniThéâtre's programming will have an all encompassing theme this year. I hesitated and said rather glibly "I don't think so"; and yet I continued to mull over the question. What will link this season together? Engagement, entertainment, exploration? All three are what we expect out of our programming ... so, yes, that must be it! That and more!

Moi, Monsieur, Moi! is the story of a young Senegalese girl who, like many others, was shuttled from aunt, to cousin, to uncle. She served as the little maid, sweating profusely, carrying heavy loads, sweeping the floor, cooking for the whole family and washing the dirty linen. In addition to her many chores, she remained a poor student abused by many at school. Moi, Monsieur, Moi! Is also the story of how a girl, a young girl, becomes a woman in Africa.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Little Bern is a six-year-old farm boy, taken in by his aunt and uncle after his parents die. Ignored by his busy adopted parents, and bullied by his step brother, Little Bern must walk five kilometers from school and back each day. Along the way is the home of Old Nettie, whom everyone in the town fears and calls a witch. One day, Little Bern gets lost in a snowstorm and is saved by none other than Old Nettie. Little Bern comes to know the true story of her difficult life, and of her son Bello, who got lost in a snowstorm himself and never returned. Little Bern then returns the favour and stands up for her against the town.

Based on stories from the Mennonite Ukraine of the 1920’s, BELLO is set in a fable-like world. Told in shared narrative by three actors, the play is a parable on overcoming our fears of others who are not like us
