Aalaapi | ᐋᓛᐱ – enriches our lives with a nuanced understanding of contemporary Inuit experience. Combining the aesthetics of theatre and radio, the project takes us to the North. The focus is on two women living in Nunavik; over a long arc, we watch their lives play out. A radio is the centrepiece in their domestic setting, and through it come the sounds of an audio documentary. We listen along with the women, and eventually the broadcast comes under scrutiny in a process informed by ethical and political concerns. Aalaapi has surtitles in English and French.

Isabel is a precocious 11-year-old whose small town would be an ideal place if it weren’t losing its businesses to a mega-mart that has recently moved in, and losing its sense of place and culture to modernity. Isabel and her best friends decide to take action after the town authorities become so risk-averse that the whole social fabric is threatened. Look At The Town! is performed in and around a completely-realized miniature town, complete with buildings, roads, parks, a school, and the local skating rink. Kids and adults alike love taking a tour before the show, and staying afterwards to explore the detailed little world.

When he presents his new painting, completely white, to his two friends Marc and Yvan, a conflict breaks out. His friend Marc, who does not like art, finds this purchase useless, which brings out old resentments and aggravates the situation. They ask Yvan what he thinks. But Yvan, anxious about his marriage, just wants to have a good time. This is followed by an escalation where this old friendship will be very seriously shaken for a matter of taste.

Inès of the West is an infamous neighbourhood prankster. One night, while she is up to no good, she encounters a formidable foe: Jérôme of Port Alberni, a magical elf who instantly shrinks her down to be no taller than three apples. When she is suddenly carried away by a Canada goose, Inès's great adventure begins!

After the success of Le merveilleux voyage de Réal de Montréal, Rébecca Déraspe has adapted the text especially for western Canadian audiences: a rite of passage that transports us from the beaches of the West Coast to the Okanagan valley, and from the skyscrapers of Vancouver to the peaks of the Rocky Mountains. Audacious and poetic, this show will charm audiences of all ages with its themes of friendship, discovery, and difference.

Tales From the Land

Written by Josh Languedoc,

Translation by Milane Pridmore-Franz

Meet Nakota. A young boy who is sick in the hospital and trying to write the greatest story ever. One day, Grandpa Rocko comes over for a visit. Next thing Nakota knows, he is whisked away into a world of stories that are right below his feet. Within the land.

This show explores the interplay between stories of the present against the long forgotten stories of the past.

Rocko and Nakota: Tales From the Land ran for 3 months at the Thousand Faces Festival and at the Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Victoria, and Vancouver Fringe Festivals. It has also traveled across Canada to various theatres and festivals including the Blyth Festival (Blyth, Ontario), UNO Fest (Victoria, BC), and Deep Freeze Festival (Edmonton, AB). Audiences and critics alike saw the play as a powerful marriage of storytelling and transformatively moving dialogue.

“First Nations storytelling at its finest.” Stephanie Cram, CBC Winnipeg

Four Directors, Gab Gagnon, Joey Lespérance, Nicole St-Martin, & Valécia Pépin, each offer different interpretations and views surrounding the idea of waiting, with a cast of community players. We all have been waiting, waiting for the pandemic to end, waiting for a vaccine, waiting for that one person to join the Zoom call, some might even say that to live is simply to wait.

An incredible design team joins them to offer their own perspective as well, both supporting the performance and drawing from it to offer an installation of design for eventual hopefuls to visit at La Cité Francophone.

Each performance includes a live introduction from Artistic Director Vincent Forcier.

The performances will be uploaded to Vimeo where ticket buyers can watch on demand with a password for the remainder of the weekend.
